The power of Reflexology

Updated: Aug 12, 2023

Good morning!!

Welcome to my self care blog. What have you been doing for your self care lately? I have recently been to my reflexologist Emma Turley of Healing Feet Reflexology. I want to share all about it as it is fast becoming one of my absolute favourite self care practices. I have been visiting Healing Feet Reflexology monthly since February 2022. I originally decided to try it out after I had suffered a prolonged post viral fatigue illness. I was beginning to recover and although I was making small progress I still suffered the effects of the illness and nothing the doctors had done had been able to help. I wanted to try an alternative remedy as I felt I needed to do something to realign myself. I have always been interested in alternative therapies and so thought there was no better time to try out some reflexology!

Emma is a wonderful practitioner, she is so positive and engaging, she makes you feel welcome straight away and she absolutely has a gift for understanding your energy and rebalancing you! My first ever treatment was amazing, I had standard reflexology (which I had never had before) and I was truly amazed by the things that she found out about me just by touching any feet! She was able to discuss aches and pains I had without me mentioning them to her, she could just tell by touching pressure points on my feet! It was a fantastic experience and I felt so energised for the days following which was no mean feat considering how slow and immobile the fatigue had rendered me.

I have returned every month as I honestly feel that she is helping to chip away at my fatigue a little at a time, we have moved to reiki flex which is a mixture of reiki and reflexology. This too is a wonderful treatment. As well as helping to alleviate problems with the reflex points, she uses reiki to try and rebalance my energy and believe me it works. When she stops and performs reiki at certain parts of the treatment I honestly feel a sense of calm and relaxation wash over me. It is just a gorgeous feeling.

Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet, hands, and ears. It’s based on a theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems. People who practice this technique are called reflexologists.

Reflexologists believe that applying pressure to these parts offers a range of health benefits. Some of

the benefits are outlined below:

  • A gentle form of natural healing balancing the body physically & energetically.

  • Stimulates the lymphatic system, encouraging the body to get rid of toxins.

  • Relaxes your nervous system by 'kick starting' the parasympathetic nervous system & reducing sympathetic nervous system activity.

  • Improved mood, sleep & Wellbeing.

  • Stimulates your bodies own natural painkillers endorphines & boosts the immune system.

  • Helps reduce pain, inflammation & fluid retention in the body

  • Reduces anxiety, stress & helps balance hormones

Although there are few scientific studies which prove the benefits of reflexology in relation to certain medical conditions, it has been seen to be a valued complementary therapy which can help to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life in much the same way as other treatments such as massage. Especially as the area massaged is feet, it can provide very relaxing benefits.
